Abstract:
This study aims to provide the phonological background for Ipulo orthography development through the analysis of elicited words and texts. Beyond a language survey conducted in 1990 by Starr & Regnier and my own anthropological study in 2011, nothing has been written about the Ipulo language. The data for this study includes a wordlist based on the SIL Comparative African Wordlist (Snider & Roberts 2004), supplemented with texts gathered through my experience of living among the 6 Ipulo people from 2010 until 2015. Certain grammatical constructions in this paper are a contextual application of words elicited for the wordlist rather than an extraction from a particular text. Selections of the elicited words have been organized by grammatical category for the purpose of morphophonemic analysis and included as appendices to the body of this paper.
