Mankong (Bamukumbit) [ISO639-3 bqt] is a Grassfields Bantu language. The
Ethnologue (Lewis, 2009) reports the following classification of the language:
Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern,
Wide Grassfields, Narrow Grassfields, Mbam-Nkam, Ngemba.
The Atlas Linguistique du Cameroun describes Bamukumbit as a dialect of Awing
(ALCAM [917]), which is also classified as an Ngemba language (Dieu & Renaud
1983: 438). However, as mentioned in Section 1.1, in terms of ethnic origin,
Mankong is most closely related to Bambalang, Bafanji and Bamali (all Nun
languages), and Bamunka (a South Ring language) language, and not with Awing,
which is a Ngemba language. Furthermore, while many Mankong people can speak
or understand Awing, they also say that Bambalang, Bafanji and Bamali are similar
to Mankong and easy to learn. This suggests that Mankong might be better
classified as a Nun language instead of a Ngemba language.
