Abstract:

The primary goal of this survey was to gain an overview of the sociolinguistic situation of the Mpiemo language [ISO 639-3 mcx] taking into account the dialect situation and bilingualism proficiency in the Sango language as well as the viability of the Mpiemo language. A dialect that might best be a reference standard was proposed in view of possible standardization of the language. The investigation was conducted in November 1995 by a group of SIL researchers composed of Elisha Moéhama, Michael Buchanan and Daniel Duke.

(This early Rapid Appraisal survey report written some time ago deserves to be made available even at this late date. Conditions were such that it was not published when originally written. The reader is cautioned that more recent research may exist. Historical data is quite valuable as it provides a basis for a longitudinal analysis and helps us understand both the trajectory and pace of change as compared with more recent studies.—Editor)
