The Cameroon Minister of Basic Education, Mdm. Haman Adama, visited
one of the Kom Education Pilot Project schools on 01 February 2008.
The Minister, en route to Foundong where she participated in the
celebration of Bilingualism Day, took time out of her busy schedule to
visit the Multilingual Education class at G.S. Ameng. She was warmly
welcomed by the entire population of the Ameng area, and greeted by
the children of the school in English, French, and the Kom language.
She then viewed a lesson where the Class 1 children demonstrated how
much progress they had made in learning to read and write their mother
The Kom Education Pilot Project is part of a multi-national research
project being carried out by SIL International, and specifically in
Cameroon in cooperation with SIL Cameroon and the Ministry of Basic
Education. The project intends to determine the effectiveness of
applying a multilingual approach to the first three years of primary
school in minority language communities. Children are taught all
subjects in their mother tongue, with English taught as a second
